Destined to Win?

 

Are some people destined to win the lottery whilst others are destined to be disappointed year after year? The belief in destiny – the notion that our lives are mapped out in advance – is widespread, but it’s not one that we recommend.

We say this because a belief in destiny suggests there is nothing we can do to improve our chances of increasing success in any area of life, let alone winning the lottery. “Whatever will be, will be,” the song goes, in which case, why bother trying?

The belief that some are destined to win and others to lose can be challenged in a very simple way: don’t buy any tickets. If you’re destined to win and you don’t buy a ticket, you’ll win anyway (though we don’t know how!) And if that sounds very far-fetched, that’s because you know deep down inside that you make your own destiny. If you want to stand a chance of winning, you simply have to do your part to make it possible. If you’re not in it, you won’t win it.

Of course, none of this stops people from saying that they “knew they were going to win” once the jackpot has already been landed. But every week there are millions of people who have similar hunches that don’t come true. So it isn’t destiny that is being described by such winners – it’s a happy and welcome coincidence.

This should encourage anyone who wants to achieve something great in life, whether it is winning the lottery, landing the perfect job, starting their own business or meeting the partner of their dreams. Why? Because if life is a level playing field, we all have a chance to achieve something great – all we have to do is believe in ourselves rather than destiny and take whatever steps we can to pursue our dreams.

That said, let’s ask you again: Are you destined to win? The correct answer is no. But have you got just as much chance of winning the lottery or anything else as the people around you? Absolutely!
