Playing the lottery is quite a healthy habit when you compare it with many of the other things that people spend their money on. Here are five reasons to feel good about your lottery participation:

1 - Lottery games don’t destroy your lungs. This means a lottery player might spend only 10% as much money as a smoker, and he won’t damage his lungs in the process.

2 - Lottery games don’t intoxicate. Okay, if you win you might feel a little light-headed, but unlike alcohol, you won’t do anything reckless as a result of playing the Lotto, Dream Number, EuroMillions or any other lottery game.

3 - Lottery participation is easy to control. Whereas fruit machines and similar forms of gambling can be addictive, relatively few lottery players are addicted to their hobby. This is due to the fact that there is no instant feedback in a regular lottery game, though of course we do have to be sensible when playing scratchcards.

4 - Lottery games don’t cause obesity. A chocolate bar a day will cost you at least £182 per year and could result in you becoming officially obese. Spend the same amount of cash on lottery games instead and your waistline won’t grow an inch.

5 - Lottery games won’t give you Repetitive Strain Injury. This is a problem that people who play video games often get from playing too frequently, but you can enjoy the lottery once or twice a week – or even more – and you won’t feel a thing.

Okay, so we all know that lottery games aren’t as healthy as paying regular visits to the gym or making sure you get your five a day, but compared to other habits like smoking, drinking and playing video games, lotteries fare very well. Remember this the next time you meet one of those people who enjoy looking down on lotteries but have a habit of puffing away on a cancer stick or munching a chocolate bar.
