£58 Million EuroMillions Jackpot Claimed By Joiner From Rochdale
Updated: Tuesday 30th January 2024
The second EuroMillions jackpot to be won in the UK in 2020 was claimed just a day after the draw took place. Ryan Hoyle, a joiner from Rochdale, won £58 million on Friday 17th April and got in touch with the National Lottery to claim it less than 24 hours later.
The 38-year-old father-of-one usually buys his lottery tickets in stores but opted to play online during the UK’s coronavirus lockdown. On checking his emails on the morning of Saturday 18th April he found one very important message.
“I always wake up early and was sat on the edge of my bed but couldn’t work out what I was looking at,” the lucky winner said. “The email linked to my account which looked like a lot of numbers and I thought it might be millions but I couldn’t believe what my eyes were seeing.”
It turned out that Ryan had won the sum of £58,366,487 after matching the numbers 16, 28, 32, 37, 45, and Lucky Stars 1 and 11. He needed some help from his parents, however, to confirm that what he was seeing was in fact true.
“I was shaking and really needed a second opinion so I jumped in the van and drove round to my mum and dad’s house. I showed them the phone through the window for them to double-check for me. They even checked my numbers against another website, just to be sure. It was real – I had won £58 million!”
The jackpot is the 20th-biggest ever won in the UK and the news about the win soon spread. “I think everyone I have ever known must have heard the news – I’ve had so many messages and texts from people I haven’t heard from in years. All of them wishing me well.”
He even found time to celebrate the win with his brothers, who live locally. “We sat apart drinking beer on Saturday afternoon in the sunshine and tried to let the news sink in,” he said. “I just couldn’t be alone but we kept more than two metres apart. I needed to talk to them and ask their advice. It was a nice afternoon and it really helped with the shock.”
The next thing the winner has to decide is how to spend the money. He said he has one last job to finish - working on his brother’s house. After that he would like to build a house of his own and treat his daughter to a trip to Florida to visit the waterparks and to go to Disneyland.
He also said that the money will mean his parents can retire. “Dad congratulated me from inside their house whilst mum shouted out if she could retire now? I replied yes!
“Mum works at the local school as a cleaner and has been struggling with a sore hip for years, so it would be great to see her take early retirement straight away. She was down for a hip replacement but all operations are on hold at the moment due to the Coronavirus crisis, so maybe I can help with that too. And this win means my Dad can stop working at the factory by the end of the week too.”
Jan Louie Wormald, who has been a close friend of Ryan’s for many years, said: “I'm absolutely over the moon for Ryan, it genuinely couldn’t happen to a nicer guy. I've known him for 30 years and he has never changed in all that time. He’s just a genuine, laid back, hardworking lad who loves his daughter. I'm so pleased for him and his family.”
The EuroMillions jackpot currently stands at £22 million for the next draw on Friday and you can buy your tickets online now.
