A former footballer who used to earn the equivalent of around £50,000 per year playing for teams in the German Bundesliga is celebrating after winning a Danish lottery prize of 5,000,000 DKK, which is worth around £588,000. Tommy Bechmann, who is 35 and was born in Aarhus, Denmark, has been playing the lottery for years, and uses the birthdays of his three children as his selections.

Those selections have now paid off handsomely, giving Tommy a windfall that could have taken him a decade to earn as a footballer. The former striker, who retired from professional football in January of this year, received notification of his lottery win by email. He had previously won a modest prize of around £12 when playing online, and the email was sent from the same address that had been used to notify him about that earlier win, but he called the lottery company directly to double check its authenticity and his £588,000 success was quickly confirmed.

Tommy says that he hasn’t yet made any decisions about what to do with the money, but he is confident that it will allow him to take longer holidays in the winter.
