Understanding the Odds
EuroMillions HotPicks uses the winning numbers from the main EuroMillions draw that takes place on the same date; the two Lucky Stars are not used for HotPicks.
The odds of winning a prize in HotPicks differ to the main game as you have to match your numbers exactly to win a prize, regardless of how many you choose.
In Pick 2, for example, you only pick two numbers and you must match both of them with two of the numbers in the winning line to get a prize. The odds of doing so are 1 in 123. In EuroMillions, the odds of hitting two numbers are much better - 1 in 22 - because you pick five numbers and can match any two of them with the winning line.
Why the ‘Pick 5’ Odds Differ
The odds for picking and matching five numbers in EuroMillions HotPicks are 1 in 2,118,760, yet in the main EuroMillions game, the odds of matching five are 1 in 3,107,515. So why do these odds differ, when you pick five numbers in both games?
In short, it’s because these odds are for matching five numbers exactly. In the main game, you could match five numbers and also one Lucky Star, or you could hit the jackpot by matching five numbers and both Lucky Stars. These are completely different prize tiers, with their own odds, and the possibility of winning them makes it slightly less likely that you will match exactly five numbers and no Lucky Stars.
The same cannot be said for EuroMillions HotPicks, where you simply pick five numbers and have to match them all. The Lucky Stars aren’t used in HotPicks, so there’s no chance of matching them.
